Produce & Services
|
Stop by the stands, as so many people from all walks of life do each day, and it's as if you've found the ultimate garden. There, spread out before you, picked and cleaned, are apples and onions of many varieties, corn, eggplant, peaches, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, strawberries, watermelons, zucchini and more.
The same customers return over and over. It's not unusual for regulars to swap recipes as they're buying veggies to take home and cook for lunch or supper.
The Providence Produce Markets are open from spring to autumn. But selling fruits and vegetables - and hiring high school and college kids to help run the stands - is only part of the work.
Owner David White owns two 26-foot trucks, which he uses to drive to Asheville, Hendersonville and Columbia to buy and bring back fresh goods.
Several days each week, he'll arise at 2 a.m., point the truck toward the mountains or south on Interstate 77 and head out. On the way to market, he'll often drink Full Throttle energy drinks to get his motor running. On the way back, his truck loaded with produce, he'll stop at Bojangles' and listen to John Boy & Billy on the radio.
He's grown to love the time to think, and the routine, as he sets out in the dark and returns home in the sunshine.
